From Mindset Student to Tech Entrepreneur: David's Journey

Former Mindset student David Okello shares his journey from learning coding in our weekend program to launching his own tech startup.

Five years ago, David Okello joined our weekend coding program as a curious 14-year-old with little exposure to technology. Today, at 19, he's the founder of EduTech Uganda, a startup developing educational apps for primary school students.

David's journey with Mindset began when his science teacher recommended our program. Despite having limited access to computers at home, David showed exceptional dedication, often staying late after sessions to practice his coding skills.

"Before joining Mindset, I had never written a line of code. The program opened up a whole new world for me," David recalls. "What I appreciated most was how the instructors connected coding to real-world problem-solving."

After completing our weekend program, David continued to develop his skills through our advanced courses and eventually joined our student mentorship program, where he helped teach younger students while working on his own projects.

The idea for EduTech Uganda came from observing his younger siblings struggle with certain subjects. "I realized that interactive, gamified learning could make education more engaging and accessible, especially for students in rural areas with limited resources," he explains.

With support from our entrepreneurship mentorship program, David developed a business plan and secured seed funding to launch his startup. EduTech Uganda now employs five people and their apps are being used in over 30 schools across Uganda.

"Mindset didn't just teach me how to code; they taught me how to think like an entrepreneur and use technology to create positive change," says David. "My advice to current students is to look beyond the code and think about how you can use these skills to solve problems in your community."

We're incredibly proud of David's achievements and excited to see how he continues to grow as an entrepreneur and role model for other young innovators in Uganda.
